Do I Need a Measles Booster?

Measles is probably not something you’ve given much consideration to, and for good reason. In 2000, the extremely infectious virus was declared eradicated in the United States. Vaccination with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, often administered in early infancy, has resulted in a year-long absence of infections. In 2019, there was a significant epidemic of measles, with 1,249 cases reported across 31 states. 75% of the incidents occurred in New York City or New York State, mostly among children who had not been vaccinated.

Texas is now witnessing its greatest measles epidemic in over three decades, after a five-year period of no outbreaks. So far, 58 instances have been documented, with the majority concentrated in a remote Gaines County town where all patients are unvaccinated; 13 have been hospitalized.

Now that measles is raging in the United States, New York City board-certified internist Yoshua Quinones, MD, outlines all you need to know to protect yourself and your family. Read the article.
